Same-sex marriage also known as gay marriage is the marriage of two people of the same sex or gender , entered into in a civil or religious ceremony. There are records of same-sex marriage dating back to the first century. In the modern era, same-sex marriage started being legalized at the beginning of the 21st century. Around the world, people are under attack for who they love, how they dress, and ultimately for who they are. In too many countries, being lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or intersex LGBTI means living with daily discrimination. From name-calling and bullying, to being denied a job or appropriate healthcare, the range of unequal treatment faced is extensive and damaging. It can also be life-threatening. In all too many cases, LGBTI people are harassed in the streets, beaten up and sometimes killed, simply because of who they are.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender LGBT rights in the United States have significantly progressed over time, with the majority of the progress on LGBT rights having taken place in the late 20th century and early 21st century. While the United States Supreme Court has legalized many LGBT rights, they continue to vary by jurisdiction , and discrimination in jobs and housing is still legal in most states. The Equality Act , which is currently proposed in the United States Congress , would outlaw discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity nationwide.
Although same-sex sexual activity between consenting adults in private was decriminalized in ,  homosexuality is disapproved of by most Russians, and same-sex couples and households headed by same-sex couples are ineligible for the legal protections available to opposite-sex couples. There are currently no separate laws prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation in Russia, however, Constitution disallows any discrimination at all in Chapter 2, mainly in Article 19  and others. Transgender people are allowed to change their legal gender following sex reassignment surgery , however, there are currently no laws prohibiting discrimination based on gender identity or expression and recent laws could discriminate against transgender residents. Homosexuality has been declassified as a mental illness since and although gays and lesbians are legally allowed to serve openly in the military, there is a de facto " Don't ask, don't tell " policy.
