Skip to content. What is spontaneous pneumothorax? A spontaneous pneumothorax is the sudden onset of a collapsed lung without any apparent cause, such as a traumatic injury to the chest or a known lung disease. A collapsed lung is caused by the collection of air in the space around the lungs. This buildup of air puts pressure on the lung, so it cannot expand as much as it normally does when you take a breath. Spontaneous pneumothorax can be either small or large.

Adam Brilz, 19, never thought his tall, lean build would land him in hospital but Brilz is among a group of men with a health condition called pneumothorax, where a collection of air in the chest can cause the lung to collapse. Brilz went to the medicentre and was told to get an X-Ray, which then determined that his right lung had collapsed by 60 per cent. Experts at the Chest Medicine Clinic say they see three to five patients a week with pneumothorax. Of that number, about half are tall, thin, young men.

This review discusses Klinefelter syndrome. Klinefelter syndrome is caused by an additional X chromosome in males 47,XXY.
